Introduction
Whilst there are many successful programs around Australia for First Nations specific training, there are few programs of scale where TAFEs have been at the forefront. Why…?
Charles Darwin University (CDU) recognises the importance of implementing effective strategies to engage, retain, and develop programs tailored to the unique needs of many First Nations Australians.
CDU's commitment to building relationships, overcoming the challenges of a Westernised model, and furthering an inclusive learning environment for First Nations students has contributed the ongoing success of many students across the Northern Territory and beyond.
Narrative
During 2023, Charles Darwin University (CDU) enrolled 2,770 students in TAFE who identified as having First Nations heritage. This represents around 25% of the total student base at CDU. Student success has been excellent at all levels which is beneficial to student, community, industry and TAFE…
CDU places a strong emphasis on developing meaningful relationships with First Nations communities, elders, and leaders. This collaborative approach ensures that programs and support services are culturally relevant and responsive to the needs of the community.
Recognising the limitations of a western educational model, CDU is dedicated to incorporating Indigenous perspectives, knowledge systems, and teaching methodologies into its curriculum. CDU aims to create an inclusive learning environment that respects the diverse cultural backgrounds of First Nations students. Every Community is different to the next….. This approach will help bridge the gap between western education and Indigenous knowledge systems, empowering students to navigate their academic journey with confidence and pride in their cultural identity.
CDU aims to create a supportive and enriching educational experience that fosters the success and well-being of all students, regardless of their cultural background, academic level, and location.
