With Australian VET acknowledged as world-class by many countries, Australian TAFEs are uniquely positioned to provide government-to-government advice and training to support the development and sustainability of TVET sectors globally. This presentation aims to explore the evolving global training trends, and the increasing role that VET is playing in the international training landscape. With a focus from international governments on skills training, there is a significant opportunity for TAFEs to play a lead role in the support and strengthening of TVET sectors.
Key points include:
- Vocational skills are key to economic growth globally, with 9 out of 10 new jobs requiring VET or higher-education qualifications (2023 Skills Priority List)
- Funding for skills training is seen as the most important priority for businesses globally, over and above tax breaks and other incentives (World Economic Forum – Future of Jobs report, 2023)
- Only half of workers will have adequate access to training required by 2027 (WEF report)
- Adoption of new technologies, big data and the green revolution will be a large driver of jobs growth, with new training and skilling required globally to meet demand (WEF report)
- Many governments globally are prioritising Vocational Skills (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, China, India and others) as the critical skills shortage is becoming more apparent.
- Commercial offshore opportunities are more and more likely to involve TVET sector strengthening and train-the-trainer rather than the traditional one-off commercial arrangement as overseas governments are looking to Australia for a sustainable way to to upskill and strengthen their skills-based workforce
- Collaboration between the TAFEs may be required to service some of the large development and giga-projects globally, as well as collaborating to produce sustainable TVET models into the future.
